Project Description

The Portland State University School of Art + Design is a 4-story, 94,645-square-foot new construction and tenant improvement project that will serve as the new home for PSU’s Arts Department. The structure incorporates mass timber construction with steel brace frames and is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, reflecting PSU’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovative campus design.

The project involves connecting the new building to PSU’s existing central plant, requiring extensive piping work through an occupied building and underground infrastructure coordination. Early BIM collaboration was critical to support the timely release and fabrication of the mass timber components and ensure precise system integration with the structural design. MacDonald-Miller delivered HVAC, plumbing, and controls systems for the new facility, working closely with the design team through a design-assist partnership to ensure performance, maintainability, and constructability from concept through completion.
