Pittock Block

Custom Solutions

The design and planning effort that went into the Pittock Block lightwell was substantial. The flawless installation illustrates the depth of MacDonald-Miller’s expertise in critical environments and historical projects.

Unique Challenges

Turning a 112-year-old historic building into a data center is no small task! A critical environment project, like Pittock Block, requires an immense amount of cooling to support the high demand for power. MacDonald-Miller was contracted to supply the building with four new chillers and run waterfall piping down the middle cutout (lightwell), spanning approximately 95 feet deep, alongside the exterior wall. The upgrade includes custom-fabricated lightwell racks to support the building’s critical systems.

Custom Fabrication

Because of the uniqueness of the lightwell constraints, utilizing off-site fabrication was key for a smooth installation!

One of the advantages of offsite fabrictation is the ability to prefab the steel to support the pipe and install that pipe onto the racks. With multiple trade racks made offsite in our Seattle and Portland fab shops, we are able to ensure efficacy, safety, and overall better quality control.

From detailing to field teams, we went through every step in the weeks leading up to the crane picks to organize and create a plan that everyone felt confident in, and the installation reflects the integrity of the work and the entire team! – Sarah DuganHiggins, Project Manager
